  1. Macintosh/TeX Archive Readme File

  5. Messages: Users of Version 1.42 or later should upgrade.
  6.           Oztex 1.7 is shareware and has numerous improvements over 1.6
  7.           (not the least, support for LaTeX2e).
  8.  
  9. This archive contains software that is useful for doing TeX on a Macintosh.
  10.  
  11. Formats:
  12. Files ending in .hqx are files have been run through binhex4 (or the binhex
  13. menu item in stuffit1.5.1) to create ascii files.  To decode, combine all
  14. parts (removing all intermediate characters) and use binhex4 or the binhex
  15. menu item in Stuffit.
  16.  
  17. Files ending in .sit are stuffit archives that are stored using 
  18. Macbinary format, i.e., a binary file that includes all three macintosh
  19. forks.  You must use binary (8-bit) transfer methods to get these files,
  20. then decode with binhex5 or transfer to your mac with any Macintosh comm
  21. program that does Macbinary conversion. The shareware program zterm does
  22. macbinary conversion as do many commercial communications programs.
  23. A few of the older files in the archive are binary files but not stored in
  24. macbinary format.  If for some reason macbinary conversion fails, try
  25. transferring the file as a straight binary file and opening it directly in
  26. stuffit (hold down the option key as you select open to make it appear in
  27. the file menu). I believe that the only files saved this way are those in
  28. the bibtex directory.

  98. OzTeX is a public domain version of TeX for the Macintosh written by Andrew
  99. Trevorrow.   TeX is the typsetting system developed by Donald Knuth at
  100. Stanford University.  OzTeX was written by translating Knuth's original
  101. code to Modula-2 and then porting to the Macintosh.  OzTeX Version 1.3
  102. encorporates the changes in TeX 3.0.
  103.  
  104. The OzTeX delivery includes the OzTeX program; a complete set of TFM files
  105. for the computer modern font set and TFM files for selected Adobe fonts;
  106. input files for LaTeX; full Modula-2 source code for OzTeX; and a
  107. complete set of font files (in PK format).  OzTeX includes a screen
  108. previewer and the capabilities of initex to create new format files.
  109.  
  110. Here are some exerpts from the OzTeX Users Manual.
  111.  
  112. OzTeX should work on any Macintosh Plus, SE, II or newer model.  It will
  113. not work on a 128K or 512K Mac. OzTeX was developed on a Mac Plus with 1
  114. Meg of RAM and a 20 Meg hard disk. This is just about the minimum hardware
  115. configuration, given the large amount of memory required to run OzTeX and
  116. the large amount of disk space needed to store  all the font information.
  117.  
  118. OzTeX can only print on a PostScript-compatible printer.There is currently
  119. no support for other types of printers. If you plan to use an Apple
  120. LaserWriter (any model) the installation should be straightforward.

  123. The OzTeX delivery is stored here packed as Stuffit-1.5.1 archives
  124. (Version-1.5.1 is necessary, as the stuffit files contain folders), which
  125. have been run through binhex and broken into pieces.  
  126.  
  127. Getting Started:  If you use the binhex versions, ftp all files from a
  128. directory (e.g., oztex/*.hqx); use an editor or editing script to remove
  129. all lines of the form <<< End of Part  #>>>  or <<< Start of Part # >>>;
  130. concatinate the files in order to form one long file; run binhex4 (or
  131. the binhex option from Stuffit) on the result.
  132.  
  133. If you use the binary versions be sure to put ftp in binary mode
  134. before starting the transfer. The resulting file will be a Macbinary
  135. version of the entire sit file.  You will need a terminal emulator on
  136. you mac that provides Macbinary file transfer to move the binary to
  137. your Macintosh.
  138.  
  139. When you have all the necessary stuffit files, use Stuffit 1.5.1 or
  140. higher version to decode the .sit files.  (Version 1.5.1 is required
  141. since the archives contain folders.)  
  142.  
  143. IMPORTANT: You will need to create a new folder called PK-files and
  144. place the font folders within this folder.
